Mechanical Keyboards 101: Switch Types, Sound & Feel
Linear, tactile, clicky, hot-swap, plate mount, gasket, PBT caps… This guide breaks down what actually changes the sound and feel — so you can choose a board you’ll love.
The 5 parts that define feel & sound
Switches
The heart of the board: travel curve, force and noise profile.
Mounting
Tray/plate/gasket/top mount change flex, bounce and tone.
Case & Plate
Alu = crisp & bright, polycarb = soft & thocky, steel = stiff & loud.
Stabilizers
Big keys (Space/Enter) rely on stabs — lube/tune eliminates rattle.
Keycaps
PBT vs ABS, profile (Cherry/OEM/SA/DSA) = texture, height & sound.
Dampening
Foam, tape-mod, PE sheet subtly lower ping and raise “thock”.
Switch families (quick feel map)
| Family | What you feel/hear | Good for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linear | Smooth downstroke, no bump. Quiet with lube/films. | Gaming, fast typing | Popular: Gateron Yellow, Oil King, Cherry MX Red. |
| Tactile | Noticeable mid-travel bump, minimal noise. | Typing focus | Popular: Boba U4T (thocky), Holy Panda, MX Brown (light). |
| Clicky | Distinct click with/after the bump. | Classic typewriter feel | Can be loud; check office tolerance. |
Size & layout — pick what actually fits your desk
- Full-size (100%): numpad, full function row — biggest footprint.
- TKL (87/88%): no numpad = more mouse space.
- 75% / 65% / 60%: compact; arrows at 65–75%, layers on 60%.
- Hot-swap sockets let you drop switches in/out without soldering.
Keycaps: material & profile change both feel and sound
Material
- PBT: textured, resists shine, deeper “thock”.
- ABS: smoother, brighter sound; doubleshot = crisp legends.
Profile
- Cherry low/angled, comfy long-form.
- OEM common stock height.
- SA tall/rounded, very “thocky”.
- DSA/XDA flat rows, uniform.
Quick recommendations
| Goal | Switch | Board/Mount | Caps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quiet office | Linear 55–60g + lube | Gasket/poron, foam | Thick PBT Cherry profile |
| “Thocky” typing | Tactile (U4T/Holy Panda) | Polycarb plate, gasket | Thick PBT/ABS, SA or Cherry |
| Esports feel | Fast linear 45–50g | Stiff plate (alu/steel) | Low profile PBT/ABS |
Cheap tuning wins (10–40 minutes)
- Lube switches & stabilizers (205g0/3204 & dielectric grease on stabs). Removes tick and scratch.
- Film linear switches if housing wobbles.
- PE/Tape mod adds a deeper pop; start subtle and test.
- Balance over foam-stuffing: too much deadens feel.

Build your feel & sound
Pick a size you’ll actually use, choose linear/tactile based on bump preference, and finish with thick PBT caps — then tune stabs. Done.
